With a population of 75,623 (according to the Municipal Register at 1 January 2010), an area of over 150 square kilometres and nearly 25 kilometres of coastline, Vélez-Málaga is the largest municipality on the eastern Costa del Sol and the administrative capital of the La Axarquía region comprising a total of 31 towns. The citizens of Vélez at the time became particularly devoted to Our Lady of Los Remedios due to the work of Father Vedmar by establishing the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Los Remedios, who eventually became the town’s patron saint.
