With a population of 75,623 (according to the Municipal Register at 1 January 2010), an area of over 150 square kilometres and nearly 25 kilometres of coastline, Vélez-Málaga is the largest municipality on the eastern Costa del Sol and the administrative capital of the La Axarquía region comprising a total of 31 towns. The people of Vélez-Málaga live in a number of areas dotted around the region – Almayate, Cajiz, Benajarafe, Chilches, Lagos and Mezquitilla, Trapiche, Triana and Valle Niza – although Vélez-Málaga, Torre del Mar and Caleta de Vélez are the largest.
This was built in the mid-17th Century atop the Cerro de San Cristóbal, although it has undergone a number of significant changes since. The citizens of Vélez at the time became particularly devoted to Our Lady of Los Remedios due to the work of Father Vedmar by establishing the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Los Remedios, who eventually became the town’s patron saint.
La Axarquía is a historic region of Andalusia nestling in the province of Malaga. Geographically-speaking, the region – also known as Axarquía-Costa del Sol – is located at the easternmost edge of the province of Malaga, Andalusia. La Axarquía has both coastal and inland areas. Its coastal towns comprise the Eastern Costa del Sol. Comares is the actual historic capital of the region but Vélez-Málaga is the most important town. People from this part of the world are known as axárquicos.
